Painted/named from a poem by Ellis Nightingale.
This is my largest (and last) of the frames I had made for me in Venice. (This particular frame is the one Alberto is holding up in the photos!) I knew I needed to incorporate some of the colors of Venice into my coastal Lowcountry style of art. It was painted with the idea that no matter where you live, travel or move to in the world, your loved ones that have passed on, are always with you. They'll find you where you are. This is an early morning scene where the atmosphere is quiet and damp and warm, where we maybe feel the closest to those we've lost as the earth begins to awaken but we're all still in a dream-like state.
Painting is 9.5" x 12".
Frame is 15.5 x 13.25" x 2" deep.
Oil on custom hardboard, in a handmade frame from Venice, Italy.
In September, I was fortunate to visit Italy to teach oil painting. I stayed in Venice and fell in love with that gorgeous place. More so, I fell in love with the many generational artisans and crafters. I stumbled into a tiny little frame shop and quickly made friends with the kind owner and maker, Alberto. He has made frames his whole life, and took over the family business from his father, who had taken it over from his grandfather. While Alberto was low in stock, he graciously allowed me to pick out a stack of unfinished frames so that he could finish them to my specifications that would best suit my art. This experience felt so full-circle because I am Italian, and I grew up in poverty; I certainly never thought I'd get to visit the country my great-grandparents came from. To have these special frames as part of this collection of paintings just felt 'right.'
All originals and prints come with the poem they’re named/painted from, in case you’d like to frame and hang it next to the art.
