This is my impressionist interpretation of the song Orbiter by Noah Kahan, specifically the line “and this is hard, but I feel less far.” Some have speculated this song was written about his mom, and whether that’s true or not, I painted this for mine.
My mom has battled breast cancer 4 times in 13 years, 2 of which battles were declared terminal, but she’s beat them every time. We thought we were saying goodbye last summer, and this year we graciously and miraculously celebrated Mother’s Day. My mom lives a few hours away, so the guilt of not being there for every second eats away at me. Thankfully, she knows I have to work and understands.
The moon watches and guides, no matter the distance… earthly or heavenly.
An otherworldly, ever-constant presence.
In many cultures across the world, the Milky Way is regarded as a "road of souls" and that has always brought comfort to my grief. As such, I paired the ethereal moon with the colorful haze of the Milky Way, twinkling stars and a sparkling deep sea.

22" x 17.5" | Oil on panel in late 1800s-early 1900s frame. The frame features time-worn character that adds to the overall feeling of the pairing. This frame had quite a few areas of missing gesso that I color-matched to make the missing areas blend in, however, more small areas of brittle gesso could possibly come loose during shipment, exposing the white of the gesso. I choose antique frames specifically for their history and perfectly-imperfect character that a new frame just can't replicate. This missing areas are not a concern to me. Please make sure they're also not to you, before purchasing.
Ready to hang.
