Kayla DeVito is an oil painter living in the ever-inspiring marsh of Beaufort, SC. While battling depression due to Late-Stage Lyme Disease, Kayla taught herself to paint to cope. She held her first art show in August 2021 and sold out of 40+ paintings in less than a week. Since then, she has continued to evolve and learned to draw upon her emotions to create works that are as layered in meaning as they are in paint. Most of her original works are painted from, or for, a literary piece. Thank you for your interest in these special he(art)works.

Most of Kayla's paintings are oil, and vary in substrate. Her paintings are made with quality canvases and professional-grade paints, and protected in an archival, UV-resistant varnish.

Fine art prints are giclée on Hahnemuhle paper- truly the highest quality paper prints you can buy. These are archival, museum-level reproductions.

Every original artwork is signed with a KD in the corner, Kayla's signature.

Each fine art paper print is numbered out of 50 and comes with a card of authenticity.

The Inspiration

This is my surrealist interpretation of the song Orbiter by Noah Kahan, specifically the line “and this is hard, but I feel less far.” Some have speculated this song was written about his mom, and whether that’s true or not, I painted this for mine.

My mom has battled breast cancer 4 times in 13 years, 2 of which battles were declared terminal, but she’s beat them every time. We thought we were saying goodbye last summer, and this year we graciously and miraculously celebrated Mother’s Day. My mom lives a few hours away, so the guilt of not being there for every second eats away at me. Thankfully, she knows I have to work and understands.

This is what this song means to me- an astronaut on a home planet, yet still feeling like an alien and second-guessing their path… afraid to take off the helmet for fear of the unknown, even though the moon and the viewer knows it’s safe to do so.

The moon watches and guides, no matter the distance… earthly or heavenly.
An otherworldly, ever-constant presence.

In many cultures across the world, the Milky Way is regarded as a "road of souls" and that has always brought comfort to my grief. As such, I paired the bright, ethereal moon with the colorful haze of the Milky Way and twinkling stars.

There are nods to my own life in the painting: palm fronds, marsh grass, my favorite time of day (twilight) when the moon is rising and bright but the sky isn't quite completely dark yet.

This was a challenging painting, but one I'm very proud of. The light from the moon and stars truly appear to glow, and the juicy shadows on the spacesuit give this painting an otherworldly feel.
