Named/painted from a poem by Wendell Berry (see images.)
This painting is large, single magnolia bloom in a dense wooded marsh, where the crossroads of sea and fresh water merge, symbolizing a intersection of sorts for personal growth. The water here is brackish, a natural representation of an uncomfortable, yet beautiful, transition. This painting is a reminder to give yourself grace in the difficult seasons, and to seek beauty that still surrounds you. In some cases, the most beautiful memories are made in the muck.
This is a real scene I witnessed a few months ago. One single, massive magnolia bloom amidst a wild, spanish-moss-riddled swamp. It felt important and symbolic, and I risked approximately 63 mosquito bites to take a reference image. I knew this large, chunky, early 1800s frame from Italy was the only appropriate encasement.
__________
30" x 24.5" x 2.25" | Oil on panel in a thick, very early 1800s frame. This frame is magnificent: it's from Italy, large, chunky and made of a dense hardwood. It's gilded in a traditional Italian technique; if a bit of the finish flakes off (see images), it may show a bit of pink underneath. I purposefully painted bits of pink in the magnolia for this reason. The tiny bit of pink on the frame is actually part of the gilding process they used all those hundreds of years ago, and is called bole.
The frame features time-worn character that adds to the overall feeling of the pairing. I choose antique frames specifically for their history and perfectly-imperfect character that a new frame just can't replicate.
Ready to hang.
