Kayla DeVito is an oil painter living in the ever-inspiring marsh of Beaufort, SC. While battling depression due to Late-Stage Lyme Disease, Kayla taught herself to paint to cope. She held her first art show in August 2021 and sold out of 40+ paintings in less than a week. Since then, she has continued to evolve and learned to draw upon her emotions to create works that are as layered in meaning as they are in paint. Most of her original works are painted from, or for, a literary piece. Thank you for your interest in these special he(art)works.

Most of Kayla's paintings are oil, and vary in substrate. Her paintings are made with quality canvases and professional-grade paints, and protected in an archival, UV-resistant varnish.

Fine art prints are giclée on Hahnemuhle paper- truly the highest quality paper prints you can buy. These are archival, museum-level reproductions.

Every original artwork is signed with a KD in the corner, Kayla's signature.

Each fine art paper print is numbered out of 50 and comes with a card of authenticity.

About The Artwork

Care Guide

Don't let the images fool you- this painting is LARGE.

This painting is large at 30" x 40", and measures 42.75" x 32.75" in totality with the handcrafted frame. It is based on a scene between Charleston, SC and Beaufort, SC along Highway 17 by the Harriet Tubman bridge. Original oil painting by Kayla DeVito. Named from a poem by Jimmy Osborne (pictured.)

The frame is Black Limba wood, a species of hardwood from West Africa. It is one of a kind and crafted specifically for this painting, with the finish and grain of wood chosen for this exact image. The frame is made by Kayla's husband, Matt, a full-time fine woodworker. The density of this exotic hardwood adds a beautiful, quality weight to the overall feel of the art piece.

The entirety of this piece is truly a work of art in every aspect, and the frame sits 3" off the wall. It is a statement piece that is sure to command attention in any room.

__________

Morning sun ignites fog and lifts it from a hidden river, just behind the first treeline. The trees are softly awakened with the glow. The spartina grass is damp with dew, and the scent perfumes the air with a settling peacefulness.

I painted this in memory of my disabled senior pup, whom we had to say goodbye to recently. I painted this to represent Heaven, where I know she is prancing through this grass, wheel-chair free.

I hope you feel peace when you look at it, and think fondly of memories of a loved one who is no longer earthside. I hope you can feel the peace I felt while I painted this ethereal, serene scene.

It took quite a few layers over the course of two weeks to complete this painting. All together, it was around 11 layers to build up the colors, shadows and highlights. The trees have texture and magical, tiny details of whimsical branches. The grass is composed of the most layers and features thousands of blades, that still somehow don't compete with the sky.

Composition-wise, this piece is one I'm most proud of. I love the bright spots in the grass balanced with the contrast of the shadows and how everything seems to be moving from the left and sweeping to the right. It feels like an antique painting to me.
