“Whisper to Her II” Oil Painting in Venetian Frame - 12.5” x 8”

Painted/named from a poem by Nikita Gill.

This is a very sentimental work, with great meaning and much symbolism. I read the poem, "For Her" by Nikita Gill and was moved to tears, as it speaks so much to what I've personally encountered in my life. I knew I had to paint the hope that I feel now looking back on my darkest days.

While I usually use gloves and brushes to paint, I knew I wanted to paint the majority of this special scene with my bare hands in the paint, and very little brush work. It was a spiritual experience for me to be able to create this detailed scene with my fingers, feeling like a child again (again, a nod back to the poem.)

I used colors that were reminders of my childhood- purples and blues- but I didn't want this scene to feel sorrowful. I love the tiny pink stars that seem to give hope.

In a handmade frame from Venice, Italy.

In September, I was fortunate to visit Italy to teach oil painting. I stayed in Venice and fell in love with that gorgeous place. Moreso, I fell in love with the many generational artisans and crafters. I stumbled into a tiny little frame shop and quickly made friends with the kind owner and maker, Alberto. He has made frames his whole life, and took over the family business from his father, who had taken it over from his grandfather. While Alberto was low in stock, he graciously allowed me to pick out a stack of unfinished frames so that he could finish them to my specifications that would best suit my art. This experience felt so full-circle because I am Italian, and I grew up in poverty; I certainly never thought I'd get to visit the country my great-grandparents came from. To have these special frames as part of this collection of "Whisper to Me" paintings just felt 'right.'
